Milling a rare giant Alaskan spruce tree with an Alaskan chainsaw mill

After a tragic construction accident the GIANT spruce tree that’s been on my family’s property in Homer, Alaska for generations had to be cut down. The tree was several hundred years old and was one of the largest remaining ancient spruce trees on the Kenai Peninsula, if not the whole state of Alaska. It’s truly rare to find a spruce tree this large and completely healthy even in the Last Frontier.

In order to keep the lumber in the family we channeled our inner homesteaders and milled the 3” slabs ourselves with an Alaskan chainsaw mill, bar, and ripping chain from Granberg and a Stihl 881 powerhead.
